Prologue CANE ON THE BARE
Another one of the cartoon selection of Masters of cartoons, sirs Neprakta and Švandrlík, this time dedicated to spankings of naughty children and unruly women. As the Masters are prone to do, they look at human sins, but also hobbies, with hyperbole. Winter's* accompanying commentary about all the places where he encountered spankings, will assure the reader that Neprakta is not a stranger to anything human. And, as a special premium, the kind reader is given several wise words and observations related to the theme, of course with Neprakta's illustrations.

*Jiří Winter is the true name of Neprakta. However, he is actually better known under his artist handle.

WITH NEPRAKTA AT A SPANKING

When I used to do spanking-themed cartoons for the daily Práce [Labor], there was a very good and experienced editor, Mr. Mach, who really favoured these cartoons. At first he printed one or two cartoons, and people really liked it, since at that time things like that couldn't be seen in the newspapers, and suddenly there was a naked ass in one of the dailies, and someone was spanked on it to boot. The readers were writing and saying they like it. So, Mr. Mach wanted a lot of them. I quite liked to draw these things, there were cartoons about some girl who got spanked almost every week. The chief editor of the daily at the time, Mrs. Daňková (she was from the bloodline of the founders of KOLBEN-DANĚK* trademark), said that it's terrible, that some naked woman is always being spanked there, but Mach told her to look at the text under the picture. "They are no shameless pictures, they are educational cartoons, it's always a daughter and father or relative who's disciplining her." And so she agreed that a reproaching father is not that shameless, that it's not bad, and she supported it. As the cartoons were successful in Práce, other editorial boards where we were bringing our creations saw that "it's allowed", and they wanted pictures like that as well. And there was really lot of them.

*KOLBEN-DANĚK is a well-known Czech company, doing mainly heavy machinery, I believe.

Sometimes they were complaining, sometimes they were bragging, but I always believed their stories.

A friend of mine was spanked by his mother as a boy; sometimes their neighbour was a witness – this show entertained her, and maybe even turned on – she let herself be invited to this sort of thing as an advisor, or she actually initiated them herself by tattling on him. This was happening even when my friend was adult, and even after he got married. I guess he got the taste for it, and so whenever he found some young lady, he looked for a chance to spank her as well. But one time one of these young ladies was strongly against it, and she ran away from him. But it was raining heavily, and it was very late. She spent a long time at the bus station where she could get home from the villa district, and when she found no transport, she had no choice but to go back. He opened the door to her, and he asked her at the doorstep: "What do you want?" And she answered wetly: "I came for a spanking." He liked that answer, and let her in, he let her dry and get warm, and both of them had fun with that spanking.

Psychiatrists and psychologists were also coming with interesting stories. Like, one of them was visited by a young lady who got a bad report card, but instead of going home where a spanking awaited her, she went to the psychiatric ambulance with a question – what to do? The doctor called her mother to come for her daughter, and before he let her go, he told the mother how should she behave towards her daughter at this time. And he praised the daughter how right was her decision to visit him first. Everything ended up well, at least that doctor thought so. Whether the mother got into an angry fit beyond the corner, he didn't know. As it happens in life, the bad student of a daughter probably didn't escape her spanking, and I bet that her mother gave her some extras for having to listen to the good advice of a psychiatrist.

For one of the pairs that used to come to me at times for an original picture, I also made up and drew a board game similar to Parcheesi. It was for two partners who take turns in the part of a student and a teacher. At first the man is the student and the lady is the teacher. Both of them are rolling dice, and they are moving towards various tasks separated by the years. In the first year, the little boy is turned over the teacher's knee, his pants are pulled down, and he gets a hand spanking. In the second year he goes over the knee again, and gets 10 smacks with the wooden spoon on the bare. It continues like this until the boy reaches the A levels exam, and then he becomes a teacher in a girls' school. The roles switch, the lady becomes a student, but everything starts from the beginning – spankings standing, kneeling, lying down... and with lots of implements, of course. Those two were playing this game a lot, and they were improving it based on their experience. Several times they came to my place to play so I would see where the game plan needs to "calm down" a bit, and where is the spot where nothing happens for a long time, and it's necessary to "step up". So that was pretty unusual, but interesting job. But there was only one copy of the game, and I haven't heard anything more about it.

There used to exist a sect of "flagellants" who practiced self-flogging. A "flagellum" was a leather whip, and they showed off flogging their own naked back and limbs in the public or in the churches, so lots of people were coming to see them. In the same way, large crowds gathered for occasional scenes where a dishonest or naughty women or girl was whipped at the post. The woman was always stripped naked, and she was whipped with a cane or a scourge. This was mainly because the cane had the tendency to leave colored marks on the skin, which increased the viewers' experience ever more. There was also "being flogged out of town" as a punishment – sometimes the convict was chased through the whole town with birches for the crowds' amusement, sometimes they just thrashed him at the town walls, and kicked him out of the gate.

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was an Austrian journalist and writer who studied in Prague. He adored both his aunt and the spankings she was often giving him. He got so used to that that his sexual contacts with his later partners were often of a kind called "sadomasochistic" today. After Sacher-Masoch got married, his needs evolved further in the marriage – he was letting himself spanked with a scourge, he was bringing home various women and men to dominate him, and he even had his wife participating. In the end he left her, though. He wrote the well-known "Venus in a fur coat" – the book that readers liked because the Venus/Wanda is only wearing the fur coat, and she's naked underneath, and she has the scourge which she uses to punish her beloved – actually, the term came about because of this novel's popularity. The term "masochism" was first used by one German psychiatrist in his book. Subsequently, the professional literature started to attach the term "sadism" as well – this came from the name of another writer, the Marquis de Sade, whose actual hobbies were not that much different from Sacher-Masoch's. However, there was one large difference. The Marquis was frequently jailed, when there was a king, when there was the revolution, well, it was often; at that time it was a fashion to punish people you could afford to in various ways, but the Marquis wasn't present in such situations too often. But in the jail, he could write, so he described lot of things just from his imagination. In the real life, he didn't get to enjoy too much "sadism".

A good English governess – they were "carrier-first" women, and they fulfilled their disciplinary duties with an unusual diligence and "personal sacrifice" – became an excellent sadist in time, and the little lord, disciplined by such governess, slowly became a masochist carrying unusual habits further into his life. It was the same way with disciplined young ladies; all in all, it was not unusual that young people growing up in good families were addicted to a cruel entertainment.

Text: In the ancient times, and in the Middle Ages, corporal punishment was a common thing, and in many places in Orient this still holds true. Lots of young women and boys have disappeared forever – they were taken to the palaces where they had their clothes taken away, and they were forced into obedience by beatings. They had to go naked around the palace, so they couldn't go outside. In some countries, the courts still deal out sentences like two hundred lashes with a whip – that can't be survived – but lots of people come to see an execution like that. It's hard to say how does such a viewer feel: if the condemned man is someone unknown, he could be innocent, and he could be wronged, and looking at a wrong this bad, at someone who might be completely innocent being whipped, I guess that the viewer is annoyed by that. But if he learns that the guy is a murderer, he will gladly come to see such "show", because he's participating in dealing of justice. After all, whenever there were public executions in our country, they were always a well-visited entertainment; women especially were curious about these shows.

Corporal punishment in the military was a part of the military rules. If the thrashing was supposed to be a warning, the soldier got several strokes with a sticks over his uniform, but in case of a crime he got beaten on his naked body. A cane, a strap or a stick were used. In the Orient, there are still sentences of being beaten to death by a stick. A bunch of people gets sticks, they stand around the condemned man, and they beat him until he's dead. Corporal punishment was frequently used in the Theresian* army, but there were never such cruelties like in the Orient.

*Theresian – army in the times of Austrian empress Marie Theresie.

The mom of Mr. Švandrlík, the guy who came up with the cartoons in this book, was in the old people's home, and the old ladies were asking her if that son of hers isn't too naughty, making up this kind of cartoons. So she forbade him to. He was used to obey his mommy, and he obeyed her this time as well – when she told him that the old ladies think it's too naughty, he didn't suggest any such naughty cartoon again. I still liked to come up with them, though, as long as Práce was interested in them. Which mean, as long as Mrs. Daňková was there. Then they got a new chief editor who, as a journalist, got beaten up in Germany during some demonstration, so he was rewarded, as a hero, by being given the rule over Práce's editorial board. He started with a new system there, and because of that, the print runs started to drop, as he didn't understand the editorial work too well, and his leadership was was more like evangelical. And thus, we couldn't bring the cartoons featuring spankings to Práce anymore. But during those few years, there was lots of them with this theme.

[Once again the universal verb "řezat". The word "řezba" means "carving", but it could conceivably be used to mean "spanking" (nobody really uses it like that, though).]

[First of all, that green guy is a "vodník", or "wassermann" – a mythological creature that lives in the water and drowns people (whose souls are then kept in ceramic pots for some reason). Mostly, though, they get along with locals, protecting them from dangers of water, and only drowning people who are bad (or not local, of course). They have no women, so they generally pull down a village girl and marry her. The joke here is that the word "rákoska" (cane) is derived from the word "rákos" (reed).]

[Mydlář was a famous Czech executioner, who (among other things) executed 27 people (mostly nobles) in a single day. Ironically, the bill he gave the city for this work has survived to these days.]

The fourth volume of "Neprakta in your pocket" series will introduce the reader to the problematics of spanking. A weaker person – mostly children and students – used to be punished by spanking by almost everybody who could afford to do it. A teacher, a catechist, a policeman, a neighbout; mostly the same person who determined that the child is behaving improperly, and that an intervention is in order. And if the judge has determined that a naughty woman deserves a bare-bottom spanking, the executioner had work to do, and the public had fun. After all, the parents weren't afraid to smack either, and lots of them are still giving lots of inspiration to the cartoonists.
